Basquiat uses vivid colours and energetic strokes, often with a style reminiscent of primitive art, to express himself viscerally. The images in “Antar” evoke elements of ancient Egypt, African culture, and references to Black identity.
Basquiat sought to highlight historical or literary figures related to resistance or the strength of Black identity, such as Antar, a pre-Islamic poet-warrior who was the son of a slave and fought against racism. This reflects his concern with racial issues and his identification with marginalized figures.
Basquiat often worked obsessively and quickly, with jazz or hip-hop music in the background. In fact, the artist would frequently paint multiple works simultaneously, often leaving elements unfinished, which has been interpreted as part of his spontaneous creative process.
