Jean-Paul Riopelle
Montreal (Canada), 1923 - Saint Antonine de l'Isle aux Grues (Canada), 2002
In 1946 he travelled to Paris. His first oil paintings were rather automatist, but in 1947 he began to develop a rich, multicoloured image, using the technique of dripping. Between 1949 and 1950 he used a thicker medium (usually applying the paint directly from the tube) to form smaller stuck forms, interconnected by threads of paint. During 1952 and 1953 they decreased in number and were integrated with facets of paint applied with the palette knife covering the canvas. These paintings attracted a great deal of international attention. His artistic development continued during the 1960s and 1970s.
Riopelle participated in the great Exposition Internationale su Surréalisme at the Galerie Maeght in 1947. He exhibited frequently in Paris and New York, as well as in Toronto and Montreal, and held commercial exhibitions in most European centres. In 1962 he represented Canada at the Venice Biennale. In 1972, the Centre Cultural Canadien and the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris joined forces to present a major exhibition of new paintings and sculptures.
