Red Flower

Mao Ishikawa
Session Press/2017/English,Japanese/330*240*13

Red Flower - Okinawa Woman / Red Flower (First Edition)” is a collection of photographs by Shinsei Ishikawa, one of Okinawa's leading female photographers. This book is the latest work by Masao Ishikawa, who studied photography at the workshop of Shomei Tomatsu, one of Japan's leading photographers, and has continued to focus on “Okinawa” since the 1970s. The book is part of his first book, “Hot Days in Camp Hansen! (1982), which was quickly out of print, and unpublished works. (1982). This book depicts a “woman in Okinawa” who entered a bar to photograph American soldiers, but gradually turned her attention to the women who worked there. From the photographer's text: “What's wrong with loving black people, working in black bars, enjoying freedom. What is wrong with enjoying sex? I like the women who live in a small Okinawa and open up. (I love the women who loved black people. These are the most cherished photographs I took in my twenties in the 1970s."-Published in 2017, first edition.
