'Reemtsma Cigarettenfabriken GmbH is a German tobacco company. Founded in 1910, the company is a wholly owned subsidiary of the British tobacco group Imperial Brands.
In the 19th century, Hermann Fürchtegott Zülch (1862-1907) founded a cigar factory in Osterholz-Scharmbeck. His sister Flora Fürchtegott Zülch married the East Frisian merchant Bernhard Reemtsma, who also entered the tobacco business. He took over a small cigarette factory in Erfurt in 1910.
Bernhard and Flora had three sons: Hermann, Philipp and Alwin. In 1918, Hermann developed a machine for cigarette production, replacing manual labour. Around 1920, tobacco expert and entrepreneur David Schnur took over the purchase of tobacco and the composition of tobacco blends in return for a share of the profits. In 1921, he acquired a stake in the company and was given a seat on the supervisory board. In 1923, he succeeded in buying up the entire harvest of Oriental tobacco grown in Bulgaria at a favourable price. In 1924, the tobacco became the basis for the new Ernte 23 brand created by Hans Domizlaff. In 1923, Philipp Reemtsma, as the new company boss, relocated cigarette production to Altona-Bahrenfeld, which was still Prussian at the time, on the site of the foot artillery barracks.
In 1926, the company put the first mixing drum (developed in-house) into operation, a carousel-like machine that mixed different types of tobacco homogeneously under a stream of air, so that instead of the Oriental cigarette, which until then had varied in flavour due to the tobacco, a tobacco blend that always tasted the same was achieved, which promoted the development of the cigarette as a branded product with customer loyalty. Between 1924 and 1927, Schnur's company Karmitri merged with Reemtsma. Schnur was expatriated by the National Socialists in 1935, emigrated to France and in 1939 to the USA, where he died in 1948.
The company's rapid rise during the Weimar Republic and the Nazi era was based on modern production and marketing methods, but above all on an aggressive expansion policy and close contacts with the powerful in politics and business. Within a few years, Reemtsma acquired the cigarette factories Manoli (Berlin), Büssum (Bussum/NL), Josetti (Berlin), Jasmatzi (Dresden), Batschari (Baden-Baden), Delta (Dresden), Garbáty (Berlin), Constantin (Hanover), Waldorf-Astoria (Stuttgart) and Yenidze (Dresden) and also co-operated with its biggest competitor Haus Neuerburg from 1929, which was finally also taken over completely in 1935.
In 1930, the aggressive repression policy of the employees working independently for Reemtsma in Berlin triggered the Reemtsma scandal, which had legal repercussions, albeit without consequences for Reemtsma. In 1934, Reemtsma succeeded in ousting the Dressler cigarette factory as a cigarette supplier to the SA. By the mid-1930s, around two thirds of German cigarette production was controlled and the company's influence extended far beyond the tobacco industry. After the German occupation of Crimea at the end of 1941, more than 28.000 forced labourers worked for the German tobacco industry, mainly for Reemtsma.
After the capitulation of Germany, the administration of the company was transferred to trustees in the British and American-occupied zones and was carried out by the occupation authorities in the French zone. The companies in the Soviet zone were lost through expropriation. After the trusteeship was cancelled in 1948, the two brothers Hermann Fürchtegott and Philipp Fürchtegott resumed their activities at H. F. & Ph. F. Reemtsma GmbH.
The administration building was rebuilt in 1952 on the site of the private Villa Reemtsma according to designs by Godber Nissen.
In 1957, Reemtsma acquired a majority stake in Badische Tabakmanufaktur (Roth-Händle, Reval).
Since 1957, the H. F. & Ph. F. Reemtsma Begabtenförderungswerk has provided financial support for talented students.
With the introduction of the Peter Stuyvesant brand in 1959, a new factory was opened in Berlin-Wilmersdorf.
In 1963, the Reemtsma Group acquired a 75 per cent stake in Sektkellerei Carstens KG.
In 1965, the Group generated sales of around DM 3.4 billion and employed 7200 people.
In 1971, production capacities were expanded again with a new plant in Langenhagen near Hanover.
Malte Hesselmann, the nephew of Philipp Reemtsma's widow Gertrud, was the last member of the Reemtsma family to leave the company board in 1973. After Feiko Reemtsma, who was responsible for foreign business and the cigar business among other things below board level, left the company in 1975, no member of the Reemtsma family held a management position in the company.
Jan Philipp Reemtsma, who had inherited the shares in the GmbH from his father, who had died in 1959, sold these shares in full to Tchibo Frisch-Röst-Kaffee AG in Hamburg in 1980 (Tchibo Holding AG from 1988 and Maxingvest AG from 5 July 2007), which thus became the majority shareholder.
Before German reunification in 1990, Reemtsma took over a cigarette factory in the GDR. Further expansions followed, initially to Eastern Europe (including Poland, Hungary, Slovakia and Russia) and later to Asia (including Cambodia, Indonesia and Iran).
In 2002, Imperial Tobacco (now Imperial Brands) acquired 90.01 per cent of Reemtsma's shares. The stake has since been increased to 100 per cent.
In 2004, the Reemtsma headquarters moved from Parkstrasse in the villa district of Hamburg-Othmarschen to the modern commercial area of Hamburg-Bahrenfeld. The site of the former headquarters belongs to the Herz family (Tchibo) and has been converted into condominiums with a wellness area since 2008.
From 2007 to 2018, Reemtsma presented the Liberty Award to journalists.
The Berlin plant was closed in 2012 as part of the restructuring measures following the takeover of Altadis. Production at the Berlin plant was relocated to the existing plant in Tarnowo Podgórne. During the global restructuring of the group, 6 of the 58 plants were closed and around 2,500 of 40,000 jobs were cut.
Today, Reemtsma still operates the plant in Langenhagen, which has been continuously expanded in recent years. From there, the company produces for the German market, but also exports to more than 50 countries around the world.'
