【Product details】
This elegant cloisonné copper vase by Ando Shippo features a refined design of blooming cherry blossoms and flowing willow branches, set against a copper base. Using the delicate cloisonné (shippo-yaki) technique, intricate metal wires outline the motif, which is filled with layers of enamel and fired to create a smooth, luminous surface. This time-honored Japanese enamel technique highlights the beauty of detailed craftsmanship.
The symbolic pairing of cherry blossoms and willows evokes contrasting themes of impermanence and resilience—cherry blossoms represent fleeting beauty and renewal, while willows symbolize grace and flexibility, bending without breaking.
Founded by Ando Jubei (1876–1953), Ando Shippo is a distinguished cloisonné workshop from Nagoya. Established formally in 1910, the workshop gained international recognition for advancing cloisonné techniques and creating functional as well as decorative items. Jubei’s training in England and leadership in large-scale exhibitions contributed to the company’s success, and it remains a revered name in metal art.
This vase bears the Ando mark on the base, affirming its authenticity.
Minor age-related wear are present. The wooden box includes a whole sheet of paper attached to the inside of the lid, with some tears. General stains and visible cracks are present across the wooden box, including the lid and base. Please refer to the photos for complete details.
