【Product details】

This exquisite late Edo to Meiji-period picnic set includes two tin sake flasks, a wooden water flask, one serving plate, a sake cup, a 4-tiered jubako (stacked box) with a lid, and a matching carry case, all neatly slotted into the elegant carry case. A custom wooden box is also included for storage.

The exterior of the jubako is adorned with a stunning maki-e design of fans and floral arabesques on a nashiji background, while the interior features vermilion lacquer and the base is finished in black lacquer. The serving plate showcases a bonsai pine tree in maki-e against a nashiji background, symbolizing longevity and endurance. The sake cup is decorated with a design of bamboo branches and leaves along a riverbank, representing resilience and flexibility. The water flask features a beautiful depiction of wild grasses, chrysanthemums, leaves, and a stylized river, symbolizing the beauty of nature and the changing seasons. The carry case itself is finished in nashiji and adorned with chrysanthemums and wildflowers on fan-shaped panels, all framed by a lacquered structure completely coated in nashiji.

Maki-e is a traditional Japanese decorative technique where gold or silver powder is sprinkled onto wet lacquer to create intricate designs. Nashiji employs a similar method, using gold or silver flecks to achieve a pear skin-like texture, offering a unique shimmer and depth to the surface.

Due to its age, the set shows some wear, including slight scratches, small chips along the edges of the jubako, and discoloration. There is a small scratch on the upper rim of the carry case. The lid of the storage box has some wear, including scratches, small chips, stains, remnants of paper, and a corner crack. There is a lacquer repair on one corner of the bottom-most box of the jūbako (tiered food box). Please refer to the photographs to assess its condition.
