【Product details】
This decorative taiko drum from the early Showa period is part of a traditional Boys’ Festival dolls display, which is used during Japan's annual Tango no Sekku celebration on May 5th. The festival showcases miniature armor, helmets, and symbolic items like this drum to wish boys health, strength, and success in life.
The drum is finished in black lacquer and adorned with elaborate maki-e designs of pine, bamboo, plum blossoms, and cranes, each carrying auspicious meanings. Pine symbolizes endurance and longevity, bamboo stands for strength and flexibility, plum blossoms represent resilience and renewal, and cranes are believed to bring long life and prosperity.
Maki-e is a Japanese decorative technique where gold or silver powder is sprinkled onto wet lacquer to create intricate patterns. The artistry on this drum demonstrates the fine craftsmanship and aesthetic traditions associated with Japanese festivals and musical instruments.
This piece shows wear consistent with its age, including scuffs, small marks, scratches, discoloration, and areas where the lacquer has chipped or lifted. Please refer to the photos for more details on the condition.
Dimensions: approx. H 17.5 cm W 15.8 cm D 17 cm
