ADVENT WREATHS are a centuries-old Christian tradition, believed to have originated in Germany. The word ‘Advent’ comes from the Latin ‘adventus’ and means: a coming, an arrival. The candles represent the four Sundays of Advent, which lead up to Christmas Day, and respectively symbolise hope, peace, joy, and love.
MARIA BERNTSEN (b. 1961) studied at the The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and School of Architecture in Copenhagen, and at L’École d’Architecture de Bordeaux. In her studio and workshop, Maria has designed furniture and lamps for Holmegaard, art decor and kitchenware for Erik Bagger Denmark and Rosendahl, and jewellery and home decor objects for Georg Jensen. Maria began collaborating with Georg Jensen in 2000, where she designed the iconic thermos Quack, the Maria Berntsen cutlery/flatware series, the Mirror jewellery collection, and the Advent (or Season) and other candleholders.
GEORG JENSEN: With a history that spans more than 100 years, the Georg Jensen brand represents first-rate craftsmanship and timeless aesthetic design, producing lifestyle products ranging from a variety of homeware pieces, to watches and jewellery. It is a highly successful brand around the world.
Georg Jensen’s philosophy was to create designs that were both functional and beautiful. His artisanal skill and artistic flair combined with his continuous ability to identify and support design talent — upon which he built the Georg Jensen company in Copenhagen in 1904. Today, the company’s designers leverage the aesthetic ideals and principles of the master himself, and translate these into the stunning designs for the present day.
