During his research on Nemrut Dağı, German archaeologist Friedrich Karl Dörner discovered an image stone by locals in 1951. Upon examination, it turned out to be the relief depicting Mithras from the Base II. When he then found the writing wall of Base III and was able to read it immediately thanks to its good state of preservation, he was able to identify the place as the residence town of the Commagenes of Arsameia. In 1953, he obtained the first excavation permit. With the American Theresa Goell, he brought to light the discoveries visible today between 1953 and 1956. Excavations resumed in 1963. Some of the discoveries are exhibited at the Gaziantep Archaeological Museum.
