Printed in the 4th year of Ansei (1857), this book is an Edo period medical treatise, “Zentaishinron,” which incorporates anatomical drawings and knowledge of Western medicine.
The “Whole New Treatise” is a Japanese translation of an introduction to Western medical physiology written in Guangzhou in 1851 by Hobson, a London missionary medical missionary, and published in Shanghai in the same year.
Although published in Japan, it was written in the original Chinese.
Filled with detailed drawings and explanations, the book offers a glimpse into how Western medicine and pharmacology were adopted in Japan during the Edo period.
It will be a valuable resource for anyone interested in historical medicine, traditional Japanese literature, and rare old books.

Artist Profile Benjamin Hobson (1816-1873) was a British missionary and physician who had a major influence on the introduction of Western medicine in China and Japan in the 19th century.
