The iron-rich gravel soils, along with a sandy clay subsoil, give the Cabernet Franc its expressive aromatics and its tight, dense structure. The 18-month aging in new barrique barrels has ideally integrated the tannins, carrying the deep fruit of Cornelian cherry all the way to the finish, accompanied by delicate wood spice and cocoa notes. A thoroughly typical Pöckl!

The history of our winery begins in 1910, when Albert Pöckl returned from his 10-year stay in Minnesota, USA. He laid the foundation for our farm, which at the time consisted of crop farming, livestock, and viticulture. Together with his wife Katharina, he also ran the village inn.

In 1945, Albert’s son Theodor Pöckl took over the business, gradually shifting his focus more and more towards winemaking. Theodor and his wife Magdalena expanded the estate to 10 hectares, providing a solid foundation for further development, which was enthusiastically driven forward by their son Josef.

Josef Pöckl, born in 1951, took over the business from his parents in 1979 and immediately transformed it into a pure wine-growing operation. In 1986, he made the decision to specialize further, and since then, together with his wife Theresa, he ran the winery as a dedicated "red wine estate."

Taking into account the climate and soil composition, Josef planted the well-known regional grape varieties Zweigelt, Blaufränkisch, St. Laurent, and Pinot Noir, while also experimenting with international varieties such as Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Theresa Pöckl managed sales for many years and represented the winery at trade fairs and tastings both domestically and abroad. She became known for her strict but fair allocation of the top red wines, which were limited in quantity. After Josef's passing, she continued running the winery with their son René, until he fully took over in January 2021.
