Excellent quality Japanese traditional hand carved wooden Noh mask - Uba姥, finely carved with meticulous details. Artist name 粕里 was carved on the backside.
The Uba is well known as the auspicious figure of the young man and his wife in "Takasago," but in Noh the Uba is not an ordinary person but an incarnation of a god, and is said to represent the feelings expressed in the waka poem in "The Tales of Ise," which reads, "In a hundred years, not a single year has passed, and yet my hair is longing for you, and I see your face."
Dimensions: 21 x 14.5 x 7 cm
Good condition: there are stains and wear off due to aging and using, please also take a look at the listed photos for a reference.
