Mario (Von) Bucovich emigrò a New York nel 1935. Durante la sua permanenza a New York, aveva uno studio al 687 di Lexington Avenue e pubblicizzava i suoi servizi di ritratto sul New Yorker. New York non era una novità per lui poiché aveva vissuto lì con sua moglie Marie Bucovich dal 1909 al 1910, lavorando come ingegnere per la Otis Elevator Company. Quando tornò nel 1935, la città era completamente trasformata, con edifici come il Woolworth Building (1913), 40 Wall Street, il Chrysler Building (1930) e l'Empire State Building (1931).
Bucovich, prima di emigrare a New York nel 1935, aveva vissuto una vita peripatetica, viaggiando in tutto il mondo, a Parigi, Londra, Berlino e, agli inizi del 1900, anche a New York. Nacque a Pola, nella regione istriana dell'Impero austro-ungarico, e crebbe godendo del comfort e della mobilità di un defunto aristocratico asburgico, suo padre era il barone August Freiherr von Bucovich. Negli anni '20 lavorò principalmente a Berlino presso l'Atelier Karl Schenker (Berlino), dove fotografò personalità del periodo di Weimar come l'attrice Elisabeth Bergner e Marlene Dietrich. Alla fine degli anni '20 si dedicò alla fotografia di scene di strada e temi urbani e trovò riconoscimento nei circoli d'avanguardia. Le sue fotografie di strada e di città, che spesso rientravano nell'estetica della Nuova Visione, furono esposte anche alla mostra Fotografie der Gegenwart al Museo Folkwang di Essen nel 1929 e parteciparono a un concorso fotografico internazionale indetto dal Brooklyn Institute of Art and Science.

Mario (Von) Bucovich emigrated to New York in 1935. During his stay in New York, he had a studio at 687 Lexington Avenue and advertised his portrait services in the New Yorker. New York was not new to him as he had lived there with his wife Marie Bucovich from 1909 to 1910, working as an engineer for the Otis Elevator Company. When he returned in 1935, the city was completely transformed, with buildings such as the Woolworth Building (1913), 40 Wall Street, the Chrysler Building (1930), and the Empire State Building (1931).
Bucovich, before emigrating to New York in 1935, had lived a peripatetic life, traveling all over the world, to Paris, London, Berlin, and, in the early 1900s, even New York. He was born in Pola, in the Istria region of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and grew up enjoying the comfort and mobility of a late Habsburg aristocrat, his father being Baron August Freiherr von Bucovich. In the 1920s he worked mainly in Berlin at the Atelier Karl Schenker (Berlin), where he photographed personalities of the Weimar period such as the actress Elisabeth Bergner and Marlene Dietrich. During the late 1920s his portraits appeared in German magazines including Der Querschnitt, Uhu, Die Dame or in the French magazine Paris, where in 1933 one of his photographs was the cover. From March 1927 to March 1928 his portraits, city scenes and architecture were exhibited at Friedmann & Weber in Berlin.
In the late 1920s he devoted himself to photographing street scenes and urban themes and found recognition in avant-garde circles. His street and city photographs, which often fell within the aesthetics of the New Vision, were also exhibited at the Fotografie der Gegenwart exhibition at the Folkwang Museum in Essen in 1929 and were entered into an international photography competition held by the Brooklyn Institute of Art and Science.
