Extremely Rare Superb Antique 19c La Perouse Tribal Australian Aboriginal Child’s Domed Parrying Parry Shield Hand Incised Carved

La Perouse is a suburb in the Eastern Suburbs[2] of Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. The suburb of La Perouse is located about 14 kilometres (8.7 mi) southeast of the Sydney central business district, in the City of Randwick.

The La Perouse peninsula is the northern headland of Botany Bay. It is notable for its old military outpost at Bare Island and the Kamay Botany Bay National Park. Congwong Bay Beach, Little Congwong Beach, and the beach at Frenchmans Bay provide protected swimming areas in Botany Bay. La Perouse is one of few Sydney suburbs with a French name, others being Sans Souci and Vaucluse. Kurnell is located opposite, on the southern headland of Botany Bay.

La Perouse was known as "Gooriwal" to the Muruora-dial people of the area.[3] The Gameygal or Kameygal clan of the Dharug people probably lived between the mouth of the Cooks River and present-day La Perouse,[4] including the La Perouse area.[5]

This area and tribe is known to be first contact for the ill fated Captain Cook Expedition.

A very fine and early stone chipped or adze cut wooden Australian Aboriginal small child’s domed parry shield, possibly eucalyptus wood but very heavy for size and proportion (evidence of darkened poker or fire work may also be present).

Hand carved, incised and cut back raised relief to the front in the traditional style but with significantly unique decoration and a fine glossy beautiful patina of both usage and age.

At the top, a Kangaroo (to the left) in a landscape fighting an Ostrich (to the right, both kicking each other with raised legs).

The middle section features a stunning depiction of an Aboriginal warrior posed in a fighting or postural stance with both arms raised holding a domed parry shield in one hand and a long spear in the other.

The bottom panel depicts a large outstretched winged bird perched on a branch, all panels and surrounds beautifully carved and incised in traditional tribal decoration, shapes and motifs. As is the obverse which is also stunningly carved along with one of the finest cut away handle I have seen on any example

What makes this parry shield very scarce is the age, decoration, dome shape (instead of flat or angled) and it clearly being for a CHILD of which I have never seen another example, I clearly doubt you will see another similar example of this quality and for a child.

So glad your happy, wonderful item and buyer, cannot fault the transaction and person

Good personal contact with the seller. At my request she sent the book later, although that caused more hassle for her. The book was shipped with care.
