Neoclassical Gold Seal with Roman Demeter Intaglio
Seal - 18th-19th century AD, Intaglio - 1st-3rd century AD
This beautifully crafted gold seal is framed with a handle composed of six radiating arms that converge into a refined suspension loop at the top. The seal is set with a Roman carnelian intaglio engraved with a depiction of the goddess Demeter. She is portrayed standing, turned to her left, wearing a long pleated garment and holding vegetal branches, symbolising her association with agriculture and fertility.
Demeter is a prominent deity in ancient Greek mythology, revered as the goddess of agriculture, grain, and fertility. She is one of the Olympian gods, born to the Titans Cronus and Rhea, making her a sister to Zeus, Poseidon, Hades, Hera, and Hestia. Demeter played a crucial role in the life of ancient Greeks, as she was believed to be responsible for the fertility of the earth, the growth of crops, and the cycle of life and death.
Demeter was worshipped throughout the Greek world, particularly in the Eleusinian Mysteries, a set of secret religious rites held in her honour at Eleusis. I received the wrong lot, had to sent it back, they provided a DHL return label. I have confirmation they received it, but they did not send me the coin I originally bought so I lost 250€. No CW help.
