→ In 1970, Seiko’s Daini division set a world record for the world’s thinnest production self-winding chronograph when it introduced the 7017. Achieving this goal meant foregoing many of the components and features found in Suwa’s 6139/8 counterparts, most notably the lack of a minute totalizer. This meant that only 60 seconds of elapsed time could be measured in any case. Surprisingly, just a year later, the follow-up 7018 held the same record at 5.9mm thick and now featured a “creeping” 30-minute totalizer. But there was another addition on the horizon, and in 1972, the 7016 arrived. Now a legitimate rival to the 6138, this model featured a 12-hour totalizer in a stacked position below the 30-minute totalizer, allowing for a shared sub-register. Thinner and more compact than the Suwa 61 series chronographs, Daini’s 70s featured another feature we haven’t yet mentioned that gives them a clear technical advantage; “flyback” reset. Rather than stopping the chronograph mechanism before resetting the hands, the 70’s hands can be reset while still in motion, and immediately begin adding up the elapsed time again. This means more accurate timing of multiple starts and stops within a timed event. The 7016 was Seiko’s last production mechanical chronograph of the era before the advent of the quartz revolution, and it undoubtedly deserves to be represented in any serious enthusiast’s roster.

→ The stainless steel case and bracelet of the watch remain clean. Signs of wear from use are visible. Crystal glass. The original dark blue dial remains clean. The inner bezel shows signs of wear. The watch is completely original and all functions are active.
