Shibata Zeshin柴田是真(1807-1891) He was a lacquer artist, artist, and Japanese painter who was active from the end of the Edo period to the middle of the Meiji period. His childhood name was Kametaro, his given name was Junzo, his pen name was Jinzen, and his pen names were Zeshin, Reikai, Tairyukyo, and Shinryutei. He was a craftsman who played a role as a bridge between the early modern period and the modern era in the field of Japanese lacquer work. In 1873, he exhibited "Fuji Tagonoura Maki-e Face Frame" at the Vienna World's Fair and won the Progress Award. His light, witty, and stylish style, full of esprit, was popular with Westerners against the backdrop of the craze for Japonism, and many of his works have been sent overseas to be adored.
