Gennai Lacquerware (根来塗) is a traditional Japanese lacquerware technique originating from the medieval period. It is characterized by the use of a red lacquer over a black lacquer base. Over time, with use, the red lacquer wears down to reveal the black layer underneath, creating a striking contrast that is highly valued for its aesthetic appeal. This intentional wear is often enhanced by artisans to create a more textured and visually dynamic surface.
The technique was initially developed in the late Kamakura and Muromachi periods (12th–16th centuries) and was commonly used for Buddhist ritual objects and daily utensils. Gennai lacquerware represents both beauty and utility, embodying the Japanese appreciation for impermanence and the passage of time, which is closely related to the aesthetics of wabi-sabi.
