A pair of elegant hand crafted Louis XVI style openwork cellars for salt and pepper by J. Verhoogt. Made of solid '835 (or higher grade) silver and cobalt glass. The Netherlands, late 19th century (1899). Rare!

Round silver bases in neoclassical style, supported on three canelled feet, each with rosette and hallmark in top part, connected with openwork gallery of two horizontal bands (one with circles), garlands with flowers in lower part, top edge modeled as string of pearls. Both with deep blue glass spherical bowls with everted top-rims.

Maker: J. Varhoogt - silversmith active from 1894 to 1936 in Hoorn (city in northwest of the Netherlands) was well known as miniatures maker. His works could be found in major auction houses, some were offered by Catawiki as well.

Hallmarks:
- J.V. over a hammer, all in the rectangle: maker’s mark, J. Verhoogt, (active 1894 to 1936);
- Lion Passent with '2': 2nd standard of silver purity: .835 or more;
- Minerva head with ‘P’: duty mark, letter P indicates Regional Assay Office in Alkmaar, closed 1924;
- Gothic letter P in circle: Dutch dating mark with a letter code, in this case P = year 1899.

Dear Anne, thank you very much!!!! All the best! Peter

Thank you very much!!!

De klok was heel goed verpakt waarvoor men dank.
