Sir Joshua Reynolds (1723-1792), After - Robinetta
This painting is called"Robinetta" from the original dated 1786 , housed in the Tate collection London and is possibly based on Anna Maria (née Lewis), Countess (1745-1804) and wife of 6th Earl Tollemache. It is a portrait of a young girl with a robin on her right shoulder and hand touching the beak of the bird. She looks down, her face shaded by a hat and her gaze does not engage with the viewer. The costume is different from the larger version in the Tate. ( A similar work by Reynolds from paintings of children was sold in Christies New York, 30th October 2018 for $52,000.)
Joshua Reynolds (Sir Joshua), born in 1723, at Plimpton, Devon, England, was a major portrait painter whose influence was profound in portraying aristocratic men, women and children during the middle and late 18th century. His approach to portraiture, influenced by Van Eyck and Rembrandt for their in depth of character, transformed portraits that were descriptive towards those that bore an influence of the European Grand Style.
