Maska - Kpeli-tak - Senufo - Wybrzeże Kości Słoniowej
The Senufo people are a collective term for ethnic groups speaking Senufo languages residing in northeastern Ivory Coast, southeastern Mali, and southwestern Burkina Faso. It is estimated that there are about three million Senufo people.
Kpeli-yehe masks are one of the many masks used by the Senufo people, with usage contexts ranging from entertainment purposes to rituals of the Poro secret societies. In Poro society, the mask has been used during funerals to drive the soul of the deceased away from the house.
The refined details give the mask an elegant and delicate impression. This mask features the characteristic elliptical female face of kpeli-yehe masks, with alternating convex and concave forms on the surface. Crescent-shaped eyelids leave only narrow eye slits visible. The long and narrow nose ridge culminates in flaring nostrils. The protruding small mouth reveals teeth. Horizontal scarifications adorn the face on both sides of the nose and mouth.
The mask is bordered by protruding edge ornaments and elongated protrusions hanging at mouth height, which in some masks are interpreted as legs or tangled hair braids. According to one explanation, these protrusions were originally earrings, similar to those in the Duyla mask, but over time they have been reinterpreted by subsequent generations of artists to their current prominent position. At the top of the mask is depicted a chameleon, one of the five primal creatures created by the Kolotchelo creator god.
