A fine Ancient Egyptian faience scarab amulet featuring hieroglyphs engraved on the reverse. The obverse features anatomical engraving of the scarab beetle, including linear incisions outlining the head, prothorax and wing cases. There is a chip to the front of the scarab that damaged one side of the head and the clypeus. Diagonal grooves in the sides of the scarab indicate the legs. A light green-turquoise hue survives throughout the scarab. The flat reverse features a hieroglyphic inscription of, possibly, a recumbent sphinx, in the top register. Beneath, in the middle-left field is a glyph of three sprouting lotus flowers. The middle-right register features a falcon glyph, and the bottom register features the basket symbol. The amulet is perforated horizontally for suspension. Some discolouration to the surface.
The scarab beetle was an exceedingly popular symbol in the art of Ancient Egypt, thought to represent the sun god, Ra. Ancient Egyptians believed that the scarab beetle rolling its ball of dung across the desert mirrored the journey of the sun across the sky from day to night. As the beetle laid its eggs within the dung, it became a symbol of rebirth and regeneration. The use of carnelian as a material also linked to the sun god, Ra, as the stone’s fiery colour was connected to the solar cult.
