A beautiful ikebana flower basket 花籠 (hanakago) by Shimada Chikuhôsai III 三代 島田竹宝斎 (1954), crafted from light brown bamboo with an attractive patina. The basket features a square base that, slightly arched, transitions to a circular neck, equipped with a loop handle. It is expertly woven using thin strands of bamboo intricately plaited in a mix of vertical and interwoven patterns. The handle is fashioned from two thin strips of bamboo tied together with a rattan string. The basket comes complete with a black lacquered bamboo segment vase, a cylindrical container perfect for flower arrangements. The underside with a signature ‘Chikuhôsai’ 竹宝斎. Shimada Chikuhosai III, born in Kyoto in 1954, is a distinguished bamboo craftsman who studied under the first and second generation Chikuhôsai. He succeeded the title of Chikuhôsai III in 1997. In 2017, he held a solo exhibition at Gallery Kurimoto ぎゃらりい栗本. Shimada continues his artistic activities in Kyoto, handling all processes from bamboo splitting to basket weaving, dyeing, and lacquer finishing by himself. His work, characterized by the use of high-quality materials and a meticulous craftsman’s spirit, exudes a refined yet rustic charm. While he maintains traditional techniques, his creations also incorporate modern self-expression, resulting in unique and contemporary artistic expressions.
