Attractive Two Volumes Set with Coloured map, 29 Colour Plates and Over 200 Wood Engravings

Item Description
Original and complete two large volumes, contain fascinating plates and text. Beautifully illustrated by Leighton Brothers Illustrators, with two tissue-guarded frontispiece. Embellished with well-executed wood engravings, a series of portraits, printed in colours, and a coloured map, showing the region of his labours. Some of the colour plates including those of Henry Stanley, Robert Moffat, James Gordon, Captain Burton, Cameron, and various native scenes.

Published by A. Fullarton and Co., London, ca.1876. Matching volumes in publishers’ original half leather spines with dark purple boards. The spines has six compartments with gilt bands, the titles are in gilt within the second and fourth compartments. Top page edges gilt.

A magnificent publication weighing in excess of 4 kilograms without packaging.

Condition
The set is beautifully bound, designed and illustrated. Firm and well-bound volumes. External covers are slightly faded, and worn at corners, edges and head and foot of spines. Internally; in very good condition. No names or inscriptions. Foxing, and spotting marks to some pages. Inner hinges are very good. All pages are tightly held at the gutter. The text and plates are clean and bright. The folded coloured map is complete and in excellent condition (Please see pictures).

David Livingstone
David Livingstone (19 March 1813 1 May 1873) was a British Congregationalist pioneer medical missionary with the London Missionary Society and an explorer in Africa. His meeting with H. M. Stanley on 10 November 1871 gave rise to the popular quotation "Dr. Livingstone, I presume".

James Ewing Ritchie
James Ewing Ritchie (May 1, 1820 1898) was an English journalist and writer. Born in Wrentham, Suffolk, the son of Reverend Andrew Ritchie, he was educated at University College, London. He became an author of travel books and political biographies. Seven of his books were about nineteenth-century London.
