DESCRIPTION:
The "Britix Watch Co" (Compagnie des Montres Britix) was founded in 1928 by Henri Quaile in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland. Henri Quaile, originally from La Brévine, also known as the "Siberia of Switzerland," had already established a prolific career as a watchmaker before starting Britix. His experience included working for an English watch company in London, which greatly influenced his expertise and vision.
Britix Watch Co. initially specialized in chronographs, a product line that quickly garnered success and solidified the company's reputation for precision and quality. Following Henri Quaile's death in 1938, the company underwent a change of ownership and subsequently moved its headquarters to Lengnau near Biel in 1945. This location is noteworthy as it is also the headquarters of other prominent watch companies, such as RADO. With this move, Britix expanded its production program to include various new special versions, although chronographs and calendar watches remained their best-selling items.
The company's distribution network spanned globally, reaching markets in the USA, South America, Africa, and India. At its peak, Britix Watch Co. employed over a hundred people and ranked among the top 50 Swiss watch companies in terms of sales.
In 1954, Britix expanded further by acquiring Apex Watch and rebranded as "Britix Watch and Apex Watch Co Ltd. (Fabrique des Montres Britix et Montres Apex S.A.)." Apex had been under Britix's ownership since 1928. In 1963, the company underwent another name change to S.A. des Montres Jaquet-Girard and relocated its headquarters from Lengnau to Biel.
The quartz crisis of the 1970s led to a temporary discontinuation of watch production. However, Britix's timepieces, particularly their chronographs and automatic watches, continued to enjoy high popularity and were actively traded among watch enthusiasts and collectors.
This sustained interest in Britix's heritage led to the relaunch of the brand in 2021. Today, Britix watches remain a symbol of fine Swiss craftsmanship and precision. The brand, renowned for its historical significance and exceptional quality, is available for purchase, offering a unique opportunity to own a piece of watchmaking history.
The watch is running and is in good condition with traces of wear. Please note: the watch looks better in real than in the pictures that have been taken in macro mode so that defaults are amplified. The watch is in good condition considering its age and is fully genuine.
The history of maintenance is unknown, but the watch runs with good precision.
Please note: Pictures are never retouched. Descriptions are done with care and honesty so that what you see and read is what you get.
