1062 pages plus frontispieces, guard pages and numerous engravings, contemporary full leather binding of the completet set of 24 books in three volumes (of 3), spines with 5 raised bands, gilt lettering and ornamentation inbetween. The Iliad is a detailed account of the Greek-Trojan war from the perspective of both sides, with the participation of all the main characters including several Gods.
Anne Lefebvre dit Mme Dacier (1647 – 17 August 1720), better known during her lifetime as Madame Dacier, was a French scholar, translator, commentator and editor of the classics, including the Iliad and the Odyssey. She sought to champion ancient literature and used her great capabilities in Latin and Greek for this purpose as well as for her own financial support, producing a series of editions and translations from which she earned her living. Dacier is accredited with bringing the works of Homer back into the public´s attention in the early 18th century.
Condition:
Volume I: good condition, small damages to the leather cover.
Volume II: very good condition, minimal leather damage towards the top of the spine.
Volume III: separation of the spine along the front, no other issues.
All three volumes with strong body, no paper damage, no significant dog-ears, no scribblings, no tears, no worm holes. Minimal foxing and moisture stains to a few pages. Please see pictures for a better overall impression of condition.
