Herod Agrippa I (37–44 CE), grandson of Herod the Great, was a Judean king known for his political acumen and efforts to consolidate power. Raised in Rome, he cultivated ties with Caligula and Claudius, which secured his kingship. Initially ruling Iturea and Trachonitis, his domain expanded to Galilee, Perea, Judea, and Samaria, reuniting much of his grandfather’s territory. Agrippa aligned closely with Jewish traditions, gaining favor among his subjects, but also persecuted Christians, including the execution of James the Apostle and the imprisonment of Peter. His reign ended abruptly when he died, reportedly of sudden illness, in 44 CE. Historically, Agrippa represents the last Herodian ruler to preside over a unified Judean kingdom, bridging Roman imperial politics and local Jewish interests, while his actions profoundly influenced early Christian narratives.
