“Crown” (1982) is one of the most iconic works by Jean-Michel Basquiat, where the artist uses one of his most recognizable symbols: the three-pointed crown. This figure symbolizes power, excellence, and recognition, and its frequent inclusion in Basquiat’s works reflects his desire to reclaim the identity and value of Black figures in history, often forgotten or overlooked. In this piece, the crown serves as a symbol of cultural and personal authority.
Basquiat combines elements of graffiti, primitive symbols, text, and vivid colours to convey political, social, and personal messages. His style is raw and energetic, maintaining a strong connection to the streets of New York, where he began as a graffiti artist under the pseudonym SAMO.
Through “Crown” and other works from this period, Basquiat asserts his Afro-Caribbean identity and challenges social and racial inequalities.
Basquiat was very young when he created this piece (he was 22) and had already become a phenomenon. Despite his fame, he often felt that the elitist art world viewed him more as a curiosity than an equal. The crown can also be interpreted as a challenge to these prejudices.
