Minted in Jerusalem during the First Jewish Revolt (66-73 CE), this Year 2 prutah features an amphora on the obverse with the Hebrew inscription "שנת שתים" (Year 2). The reverse shows a vine leaf with "חרת ציון" (Freedom of Zion), symbolizing Jerusalem's defiance and desire for independence. These coins, issued by Jewish rebels, provide significant non-literary evidence of the period and reflect the ideology of resistance against Roman rule (Hendin 6389b; Deutsch, Coinage of the First Jewish Revolt).
Provenance: Ex-Danish private collection, acquired before 1990.
