The chrysanthemum, a symbol of longevity and rejuvenation in Japanese culture, is beautifully rendered in this finely detailed piece. Oshima Joun, born in Tokyo, succeeded his father Oshima Takajiro, a master metalworker, in 1878 and adopted the name Joun. He excelled in wax casting and engraving techniques, creating numerous celebrated works. In 1900, Joun's artistic achievements were recognized globally when he was awarded a gold medal at the Paris Exposition Universelle. In addition to his artistry, Joun was a respected educator who taught at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts for approximately 40 years, nurturing the next generation of craftsmen. This sculpture bears a carved signature on the back, further authenticating its origin. Additionally, the lid of the original wooden box features an inscription and stamp commemorating the visit of the Emperor of Manchukuo to Japan.
