ITEM DESCRIPTION:
Comes with kimono or cotton bag. Comes with Authenticy certificate from Supein Nihonto.
Incredibly rare and exclusive piece. This is a precious tanto with masterful forging from the early Edo period although perhaps earlier on a koshirae of the highest quality. Despite the lack of documentation for any connoisseur will appreciate this masterpiece. It was bought by a respectable dealer of Japanese antiques and came from a wealthy family who wanted to remain anonymous, possibly because this type of pieces are very exclusive and selling them is usually a problem for the family.
The tanto is delivered in a box with the emblem of the tokugawa family and coincides with the period of the koshirae so the most plausible version is that it was given by a member of the Tokugawa family, surely the most important family in the history of Japan besides the emperor, with Tokugawa Ieasu at the head of the unification of Japan and later Edo period, to another important daimyo family or other respected family of society as a present. These exchanges were common between powerful daimyos and wealthy families for both distant relatives and other families.
The quality and antiquity of the box and the koshirae is indisputable. It is a 19th century koshirae probably made for the old blade to measure taking advantage of the menuki ana. Pieces of silver and silver-plated copper with marine motifs Nami (waves) and birds beautifully worked. This type of koshiraes can be seen in some museums and always belonged to families with a lot of power and money since the cost of making something like this was beyond the reach of 99% of the Japanese society of the time. While the kogatana are authentic from XIX th, the small blade is a reproduction to fit correctly in the koshirea. Little more can be said about this magnificent piece that undoubtedly any connoisseur will appreciate. Similar pieces have been seen to exceed 50-70k at European auctions, even without the blade. The chances of finding this kind of pieces are incredibly rare as they are often not auctioned but sold among dealers and high collectors and businessmen in Japan who try to keep this kind of exclusive pieces from reaching the European market. During the meiji era and japanism in Europe some pieces like this were acquired by great collectors but now it is rare to find them even with the right money.
The blade is in old japanese polish remaining in good condition, the jihada of the steel is detailed and full of details to appreciate. A masterpiece Worthly a museum and a great addition to any private collection.
Blade is in very good condition due to aging. Not hagire and not fatal damage, of course. This is a japanese weapon so have a real historical value. This is a weapon not machine crafted so can be minor movements of saya, tsuka, tsuba, etc. Because of dilatation, humidity, etc. and little damages propers of his age like small rust, scratches, etc. Sold as is.
An Authentic nihonto japanese sword, difficult to find in Europe, without the consequent costs of importing from Japan or from Japanese sellers, which can increase the price of the sword by up to 30% and a months waiting for shipment and custom paperwork. A truly real nihonto to delight both new and experienced collectors.
All my swords are originals, imported from japan and Europe from the best dealers and collectors during many years of collection and passion.
