Khukhutan (1904, Naukan - 1969, Uelen) - Eskimo artist, bone carver, engraver. Honored Artist of the RSFSR (1961).
Khukhutan was born in 1904 in Naukan into the family of a sea animal hunter. Since childhood, he went to sea fishing and learned bone carving. At the age of 24, he lost his leg as a result of a hunting accident[K 1]. After an injury, he turned to the art of bone carving. From 1928 to the end of the 1960s he worked in Naukan (1930s; 1950-1955), Nunyamo (1959-1962), Uelen bone-carving workshop (1945-1950, 1955-1957, 1962-1969)
Khukhutan’s works were replicated in Chukotka bone-carving workshops, exhibited at district, regional, regional and republican exhibitions: “Soviet Far East” (Khabarovsk, 1964; Vladivostok, 1967; Ulan-Ude, 1969); "Soviet Russia"
(Moscow, 1965, 1967), “Chukchi-Eskimo carving and bone engraving” (Moscow, 1977, posthumously), as well as exhibitions of folk art abroad[5]. In 1961, Khukhutan was awarded the title of Honored Artist of the RSFSR[5][6]. He died in 1969 in Uelen
