These are two beautiful Sosaku Kokeshi. The left one is by Miyajima Muhitsu and the right one by Sadao Kishi. Both have intriguing shapes. Miyajima Muhitsu was born in 1929 and started as a traditional kokeshi maker. Sadao Kishi is a prominent Kokeshi maker. He won numerous awards. His kokeshi are very popular. He is credited for being one of the major influencers within the ‘Sosaku Kokeshi Movement’. Kokeshi are wooden handmade artisanal dolls from Japan. The most prevalent theory is that they appeared during the Tempo period (1830 - 1843) in the mountainous Tohoku region. Initially, they were intended as toys for the children. Later they became popular souvenirs and real decorative items, for some even collector items.
