The Dance of Death, woodcut by Hans Holbein. Hans Holbein's The Dance of Death woodcut series was first published in 1538 in Lyon, France. The woodcuts were part of a book titled ”Les Simulachres et Historiees Faces de la Mort” (The Images and Stories of Death), which contained a series of 41 woodcut illustrations depicting various scenes of the Dance of Death. This publication became one of the most famous visual interpretations of the medieval theme, illustrating the inevitability of death for all people, regardless of status.
Hans Holbein the Younger (1497/1498–1543) was a German-Swiss painter and printmaker renowned for his detailed portraits, which captured the realism and character of his subjects. He is best known for his portraits of prominent figures at the court of Henry VIII in England, as well as for his illustrations for "The Dance of Death" series.
