Thilo Maatsch (1900-1983) was a German abstract painter and sculptor associated with the Constructivist movement. Born in Braunschweig, Germany, he began his artistic career in the 1920s, influenced by the geometric abstraction of the De Stijl group and Russian Constructivism.
Maatsch is known for his use of simple geometric shapes and primary colors in his compositions. He was a member of the November Group, an association of radical artists and architects in Germany. In 1924, he participated in the first exhibition of the Hannover Abstrakten, a group of abstract artists.
During the Nazi regime, Maatsch's work was labeled as "degenerate art," leading to a period of artistic suppression. After World War II, he continued to create and exhibit his abstract works, contributing to the revival of modernist art in post-war Germany.
Maatsch's artwork can be found in several major museums, including the Sprengel Museum in Hanover and the Kunsthalle in Hamburg. His legacy lies in his contribution to geometric abstraction and his role in the development of Constructivism in Germany.
