Grand Duke Ludwig II of Hesse

(1777-1848)

Founder of the Order of Merit of Philip the Magnanimous

The Grand Duke of Hesse founded this order in memory of his ancestor Philip the Magnanimous, Landgrave of Hesse, who lived from 1504 to 1567 and was one of the prominent leaders of the Reformation.

The order was divided into a total of seven classes, which were also awarded with swords to military personnel from 1849 onwards. From 1876, the order was officially named "Grand Ducal Hessian Order of Philip" and, after an amendment to the statutes in 1881, it was also awarded with a crown.

The breast star for the Commander's Cross 1st Class is a victorian, white enameled cross with a gold border and a medallion in the center. This medallion shows the golden bust of Landgrave Philip the Magnanimous looking to the left on a blue background. A surrounding gold-bordered ring bears the order's motto "SI DEUS NOBISCUM QUIS CONTRA NOS" (if God is with us, who can be against us) on a white background.

With a change in 1911, the Commander's breast star received five golden rays in each of the corners of the cross; the version of this award presented here corresponds to the version before 1911, which has not yet been changed.

You will receive this order as a museum copy true to the original.
