Circa 1st milllennium BC This black stone cylinder seal features a contest scene carved into its surface. The seal is drilled lengthwise through the body for suspension. The depicted scene portrays two nude heroes, each adorned with a headdress. One hero is shown grasping an ibex, while the other hero holds a lion. Additionally, an inscription panel is present on the side of the scene. Cylinder seals are primarily associated with Mesopotamian civilizations. These small, cylindrical objects, typically made of stone or other durable materials, bear intricate engravings that serve as both artistic expressions and practical tools. Originating in Sumer around 3500 BC, cylinder seals played a crucial role in administrative and economic transactions, serving as personal signatures for individuals in various aspects of daily life.
