Mandarin ducks, known for their striking appearance and monogamous behavior, symbolize love and fidelity in Japanese culture, making this set a meaningful and decorative addition to any collection. Miyamoto Risaburo (1904-1998) was a renowned Japanese sculptor born in Oita Prefecture. He studied under Mitani Kogetsu in Kyoto before moving to Tokyo to apprentice with Sato Chozan. His work gained significant recognition over the years, winning multiple awards at the Japan Art Institute Exhibitions, including for pieces such as "Red Frog," "Ox," "Little Shrike," and "Falcon." He also achieved success at the Shotoku Taishi Exhibition and the Bunten Exhibition. His unique style often featured small creatures like lizards and crabs, capturing their lifelike essence with soft, rounded forms. Besides his exhibition work, he created Buddhist statues for temples, including the Fudo Myo-o and Kongo Rikishi statues for Mijoin Temple in Ota Ward and the Enma Daio statue for Enmado in Fukagawa. The ducks show some signs of age, including minor scuffs, stains, chips, and cracks. The male duck has significant wear, with chunks chipped off from its wing and tail, leaving those areas noticeably missing. Additionally, the female duck's belly features a prominent crack, further indicating their vintage character. Please refer to the photos for a detailed view of their condition.
