Nr. 88315447
An uncommon and striking solid wooden shishi’gashira 獅子頭 (temple lion head) with finely hand-carved details. This type of head was used in the traditional Japanese shishimai 獅子舞 (lion dance). The lion's expression is imposing, with gilded and black lacquered eyes and a horn adorned with white hair flowing backwards. Carved from mulberry wood (kuwa), the piece has a clean, minimalist finish, which is rare as most of these heads are usually fully lacquered, making this sleek version particularly unique.
With a movable jaw, and both the ears and the horn removable.
Dimensions including ears:
Height 41 cm, Width 67 cm, Depth 30.5 cm.
Period: Japan – Shôwa period (1926-1989).
It is in a very good original condition. Please look at the photos for a condition reference.
Japan has a rich tradition of lion dancing, known as shishi-mai 獅子舞. It is believed to have been introduced from China during the Tang Dynasty and became associated with the celebration of Buddha’s Birthday. The first recorded lion dance in Japan took place during the inauguration ceremonies of Tōdai-ji in Nara in 752. Typically performed during the New Year to bring good luck and ward off evil spirits, the lion dancers are often accompanied by flute and drum musicians. It is also showcased at various festivals and special occasions. In some performances, the lion may bite people's heads to bestow good fortune. See the last photo for an example of how a shishi'gashira head is worn during the dance.
