In the Sepik region of Papua New Guinea, a payback dagger is a ceremonial or combat weapon often used in traditional practices of revenge or retribution, known as "payback". The dagger is typically crafted from cassowary bone, a material highly valued for its strength and symbolic significance. In the context of Sepik culture, payback is an important cultural practice where wrongdoings—such as deaths, insults, or other forms of harm—are avenged, often through violence or compensation. These daggers can be intricately decorated, with carvings or other embellishments that reflect the cultural and artistic styles of the Sepik people. While they hold practical use in combat, they are also seen as important cultural artifacts, embodying the idea of justice and retribution in local traditions.
