Magnificent Art Deco Dancer/ Musician figurine designed by the famous German artist Gustav Oppel (1896 - 1978) for Aelteste Volkstedter Porzellanmanufaktur, in perfect condition. Made in the style of the sculptures created by Erasmus Grasser in 1480 for the Munich town hall, the Jester / Harlequin/ Musician figurine is part of a series designed by Gustav Oppel (each depicted in a national costumes representing England, France, Russia, Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Turkey). Hand painted in vivid colors and gilded, the figurine capture the waiving movement and even the dramatic mimic of the performing musician’s dance, great proof of the exquisite talent of the artist. Gustav Oppel was a well-known German modeller and sculptor who learned the profession of a model maker at the Aeltesten Volkstedter porcelain factory in Rudolstadt-Volkstedt, where his father and brother Alfred Oppel worked. Before 1912, he began studying at the drawing school at the Academy of Applied Arts in Dresden and institute Kunstgewerbemuseum in Munich under the supervision of Professor Heinrich Waderé and pupil of Joseph Wackerle. Since the turn of 1918/1919 he worked as an independent sculptor (porcelain sculpture) and made designs between 1915-1924 for the Schwarzburger Werkstätten for Porzellankunst in Unterweißbach, the Aelteste Volksstedter porcelain factory in Rudolstadt and Rosenthal in Selb Bavaria, from 1924-1936. He was a member of the Reich Union of German Artists. The "Aelteste Volkstedt" was founded in 1762, being the oldest working porcelain manufactory in Thuringia. Its founding dates back to Georg Heinrich Macheleid who deciphered the composition for the right porcelain paste, the "Arkanum", in 1760. Artistic pieces from the Aeltesten Volkstedter Porzellanmanufaktur are highly regarded among connoisseurs and collectors. The figurine is perfect condition, Like New Never Used, marked with Aelteste Volkstedter 1762 mark of the period, impressed numbered #V20840 under the base, NO chips, NO cracks and NO repairs, please see the pictures as they are part of description.
