Yacoub Artin (1842-1919) was a higly accomplished orientalist and educationalist and a ''staunch supporter of the British occupation in Sudan". For maby years Artin Pasha, an Armenian by birth, slaved for Egypt. and held the distinguished post of Minister of Education. Pasha's book consistsa of a series of letters to his wife, with general notes at the end, comparing the existing native of the Sudan to the Germans in the time of Tacitus.
