This miniature hand-carved wooden statue represents Jizo Bodhisattva (Jizō Bosatsu), also known as Kṣitigarbha in Sanskrit. Jizō is a deeply revered bodhisattva in Buddhist tradition, often depicted as a compassionate monk. He is venerated for his vow to save all beings from suffering during the time between the death of Shakyamuni Buddha and the arrival of Maitreya, the future Buddha. In Japan, Jizō is particularly cherished as the guardian of children and the protector of travelers and the deceased.

Crafted during the Edo period or later, this statue showcases the serene presence of Jizō, holding a staff, standing on a lotus base—a symbol of purity. The piece exhibits natural signs of aging, including minor scratches, chips, patina, and soil accumulation, which add to its antique charm and authenticity.

Please refer to the photos for a closer look at its condition and details. This statue is a beautiful representation of the enduring spirit of compassion in Japanese Buddhist art, making it a meaningful addition to any collection.
