【Product details】
This exquisite Suzuribako (ink stone box) from the Meiji period features a stunning makie design of a pair of swans swimming in a river, set against a black lacquer background. The river is surrounded by omodaka (arrowhead) and other grasses rendered in meticulous detail. The inside of the lid reveals a beautiful arrangement of chrysanthemums and wild grasses painted in makie on a nashiji background. The tray also showcases a captivating floral motif, emphasizing the delicate artistry of this piece. The ink stone is complemented by a water dropper intricately carved in the form of a lion in high relief.
Maki-e is a traditional Japanese decorative technique where gold or silver powder is sprinkled onto wet lacquer to produce intricate designs. Nashiji employs a similar method, using gold or silver flecks to achieve a pear skin-like texture, offering a unique shimmer and depth to the
surface.
Each motif carries symbolic meaning. Swans often symbolize grace, beauty, and transformation, while their presence in water reflects tranquility. Omodaka, or arrowhead plants, are associated with victory and prosperity. Chrysanthemums represent longevity and rejuvenation. Wild grasses are a classic motif in Japanese art, symbolizing the beauty of nature and the passing seasons. The lion-shaped water dropper symbolizes strength, courage, and protection.
There are signs of wear, minor scratches, lacquer chips, gold leaf loss, discoloration, and usage marks due to age. Please refer to the photos for the condition of the item.
Dimensions: approx. H 4 cm W 22.5 cm D 25.3 cm
