【Product details】

This set features eight Noh masks created by Nobuaki in the Showa period, including Akayashi, Uba, Magojiro, Hannya, Shōjō, Kojō, Ōkina, and Koomote. Each mask in this collection represents a different character from the Noh repertoire and is carved with the name of the maker on the inside.

The Akayashi mask depicts a vengeful spirit or a strong, resolute man, characterized by its fierce expression. The Uba mask represents an old woman, often used in plays that express themes of love, devotion, and the passage of time. Magojiro represents a young woman. It is said to have been created by the early Edo period Noh actor Kongo Magojiro Yorisuke, who modeled the mask after his deceased wife. The Hannya mask, with its fierce expression and horns, symbolizes a jealous female demon. The Shōjō mask is associated with a mythical drunken spirit who is fond of sake, depicted with a red face and an expression of joy. The Kojō mask represents an old man, often portrayed with a long beard, and is typically used in plays that depict aged characters who impart wisdom. The Ōkina mask, also representing an old man, is traditionally used in ritualistic performances to invoke good fortune and longevity. Lastly, the Koomote mask depicts a young woman with a serene and modest expression, symbolizing grace and beauty.

There are signs of wear consistent with age, such as scuffs, small surface marks, stains, and some chipped paint. Please examine the photos for a detailed view of their condition.

Dimensions of Hannya: approx. H 24.5 cm W 16.8 cm D 10 cm
Dimensions of Koomote: approx. H 21.5 cm W 13.8 cm D 7.5 cm
