I offer a nice pair of hand painted linen made nobori hata banners used to decorate shrines.
The samurai crest painted on both banners represents the Hojo clan, one of the most powerful in Japan, that controlled the hereditary title of shikken (regent) of the Kamakura shogunate between 1203 and 1333. The Hojo crest representing 3 triangles.
The three characters depicts a scene of Dan no Ura's battle held in 1185 during which the commander Taira Tomomori and the grandmother of the child Emperor Antoku flung themself into the sea with the child following the defeat of their side.
The Battle of Dan-no-ura was a major sea battle of the Genpei War. On April 25, 1185 the fleet of the Minamoto clan (Genji), led by Minamoto no Yoshitsune, defeated the fleet of the Taira clan (Heike).
In good conditions, some ageing signs of wearing and some holes as photos show.
Period early 20th
The banners are in the European Union, therefore no hidden import taxes within the EU.
