Ancient Egyptian Alabaster Jar
Circa 2nd-1st millennium BC
This alabaster jar has a body that rises from a flat bottom and flares gently to a broad opening with a thick, everted rim. The smooth, polished alabaster surface underscores the luxurious nature of such jars, which were often used to store precious oils and perfumes.
Alabaster, a form of calcium carbonate, was widely used in ancient Egypt for crafting vessels. Egyptians employed alabaster for creating containers, jars, and other items as early as the Predynastic period (circa 6000–3150 BC).
Dimensions: 100mm x 95mm; weight 610g
Provenance: From the collection of a London gentleman; formerly acquired in early 2000s; previously in 1970s UK collection.
