- Japan - Shōwa period (1926-1989)
Maehata Shunsai 前端春斎 is a renowned lacquerware craftsman, part of a prestigious lineage of Kaga lacquer artists spanning three generations. This tea caddy (natsume) was created by the second-generation Maehata Shunsai.
This is a beautiful natsume adorned with luxurious gold maki-e dianthus designs. The gold sections are slightly raised, giving the piece a three-dimensional and opulent feel. The rim of the lid and the interior features "Nashiji 梨地" lacquer, decorations found only in high-end natsume.
(Nashiji lacquer : a technique where gold powder is sprinkled onto a flat lacquered surface, covered with a transparent lacquer, and then polished to reveal the gold or silver underneath. It is called Nashiji because its appearance resembles the surface of a pear.)
Dimensions : 7.5 × 7 × 7 cm
Weight : 71 g
