Kamakura carving is a traditional craft in which wooden bases such as katsura and ginkgo are shaped, patterns are carved into them, and then finished with lacquer. Its origins date back to the Buddhist altar implements made by Buddhist sculptors during the Kamakura period.
The distinctive feature of Kamakura carving is that the parts other than the pattern are marked with a knife, and the carvings are left intentionally. A technique is also used in which ink is sprinkled on vermilion lacquer to bring out the colors, and the techniques of carving and painting have been refined for 800 years.
