Antique samurai doll 武者人形 (Musha ningyô) featuring the legendary samurai Minamoto no Yoshitsune 源義経 (1159-1189), renowned for his martial prowess. In a seated position, he dons a richly detailed golden yoroi (armor) over a green kimono adorned with a bamboo design. The front of his chest piece with the sasarindô 笹竜胆 crest of the Minamoto/Genji Clan. He wears a gold-coloured 'courtier hat' (eboshi), and holds a signal baton (saihai) in one hand, a golden fan in the other, and keeps a long sword at his side. Some additional accessories that came with the doll as seen in the photo. Yoshitsune’s features are meticulously crafted, including eyes inlaid with glass and noble white skin achieved through multiple applications of gofun 胡粉, a fine white pigment made from the powdered shell of the itabo oyster (Ostrea denselamellosa). Minamoto no Yoshitsune 源義経 (1159-1189) was a legendary Japanese general of the Minamoto clan during the late Heian period. Celebrated for his strategic brilliance, Yoshitsune was pivotal in the Genpei War, leading his clan to victory against the rival Taira family. His military exploits have immortalized him in Japanese history and culture as the epitome of a heroic figure. Despite his prowess and loyalty, his relationship with his half-brother Yoritomo deteriorated, leading to his tragic and untimely death. Period: Japan – Early Meiji period (Second half 19th century).
